
CMER is offering a new format for Alternate Route Dance/Movement Therapy training
in conjunction with the John F. Kennedy University Master of Arts degree in Counseling
Psychology – Specialization in Expressive Arts. The MA degree integrates the creative
process into the academic learning and applied practice of counseling psychology.
The first DMT course, to be held at the John F. Kennedy campus in San Jose, CA is
"INTRODUCTION TO DANCE/MOVEMENT THERAPY
THEORY AND PRACTICE LEVEL 1:
THEORETICAL ORIGINS, FOUNDATIONS AND PRINCIPLES"

Course Description:
Through experiential exercises, readings and discussion, participants will be introduced to the rich professional field of dance/movement therapy. Students will examine the foundational tenants defining dance/movement therapy as a creative, expressive, healing and integrating process. Discussions will focus on the history and theoretical origins of dance/movement therapy in Western culture emphasizing the methods of dance/movement therapy pioneers.
In addition, from an anthropological perspective, participants will explore therapeutic elements in dances from world cultures. Participants will delve into the world of communicative and expressive movement while being introduced to dance/movement therapy treatment for specific populations including children, higher functioning adults, elders and hospitalized psychiatric patients.
This course is designed for students who wish to pursue alternate route training in dance/movement therapy with the goal of becoming a registered dance/movement therapist, R-DMT. "This course has been approved by the American Dance Therapy Association as meeting requirements for the Alternate Route R-DMT credential." Additional courses toward that credential can be taken through the Center for Movement Education and Research. |
Course Goals:

Describe and demonstrate the therapeutic aspects of dance from a world
cultural perspective. |

Gain a basic understanding of the historic development and theoretical
principals of the field of dance/movement therapy in the U.S. |
| 3) |
Discuss the theories and methods of dance/movement therapy pioneers
including Blanche Evan, Marion Chace, Mary Whitehouse and Trudy Schoop. |
| 4) |
Develop insight into how expressive dance and movement may stimulate somatic awareness, creativity, evoke feelings, and effect therapeutic insight and change. |
| 5) |
Apply enhanced awareness of movement behavior and leadership skills in clinical practice. |
| 6) |
Experience an introduction to dance/movement therapy approaches and interventions with a range of populations including hospitalized psychiatric patients, higher functioning adults, elders and children. |

7 day intensive held over 2 extended weekends
9:00 am - 5:15 pm each day (with 1 hour lunch break)
